British acting legend Sir Michael Caine has officially announced his retirement from acting following the release of his latest film. The 90-year-old actor revealed in an interview with the BBC that he has finally decided to step away from the industry, stating, “I keep saying I’m going to retire. Well, I am now.” Caine explained his reasoning, saying, “I’ve had a picture where I’ve played the lead and had incredible reviews… What am I going to do that will beat this?” With an impressive filmography spanning seven decades, Caine has starred in over 160 films, including iconic classics like Zulu and The Italian Job, as well as more recent blockbusters such as Interstellar and The Dark Knight franchise alongside Christian Bale.
In his final film, The Great Escaper, which was released on October 6, Caine portrays real-life World War Two veteran Bernie Jordan, who famously escaped from a care home to attend D-Day celebrations in France. Reflecting on his future prospects in the industry, Caine admitted, “The only parts I’m liable to get now are 90-year-old men. Or maybe 85. They’re not going to be the lead. You don’t have leading men at 90, you’re going to have young handsome boys and girls. So I thought, I might as well leave with all this.” The film also stars Glenda Jackson, who unfortunately passed away in June after its completion.
Coinciding with his retirement, Sir Michael has a novel titled Deadly Game set for release in the coming month. The book follows the thrilling adventures of DCI Harry Taylor, a detective known for his disregard of red tape and political reputations. Caine expressed his excitement about the novel, saying, “It’s been my ambition for years to write a thriller. It’s the genre I most love to read, and I’ve really got a buzz out of working on Deadly Game and teaming up with Hodder once again to publish it. I hope readers enjoy getting to know Harry Taylor as much as I did.”
