California Dreaming: A Captivating Review of Camper Van Adventures

Experience the Adventure of a Lifetime in the Volkswagen California Camper Van

The weather forecast didn’t look promising – heavy rain and strong winds threatened to hinder our journey south. To make matters worse, the model I was set to drive didn’t have an “inside toilet.” It almost made us reconsider our plans. Staying home and watching the rugby World Cup battle between Ireland and South Africa seemed like a cozy alternative, especially since I couldn’t figure out how to fold down the rear seats to make a bed. I refused to budge unless this issue was resolved. I’ve had too many experiences with unreliable old cars or running out of petrol to settle for sleeping in a car seat.

Fortunately, someone more observant than me was able to consult the owner’s manual and solve the problem in no time. It was a sign. We only live once, and we had been looking forward to this adventure for a while.

Despite not booking accommodation in camper van parks beforehand (I confess, I’m not the most organized person), we decided to check around after struggling with the car seats. In the end, we ended up at the Grand California near Fethard, Co Wexford, where we had a great experience during our previous visit, albeit in better weather conditions.

However, this California model didn’t quite live up to the same level of luxury, spaciousness, or warmth as the Grand version. It felt rather Spartan and the dreary grey color both inside and out didn’t do much to improve its appeal, especially in the gloomy weather. Nevertheless, we arrived in good spirits.

To be fair, the vehicle was a joy to drive – smooth on the motorway and easy to navigate on the narrower, twisty roads along the south-east coast. The large wing mirrors and unobstructed view from the rear made it effortless to handle. The high driving position provided excellent visibility. I only needed to adjust to the larger-than-normal frame when maneuvering on narrower country roads. I always worry about scratching or damaging vehicles like this, but eventually, I settled into a comfortable rhythm and enjoyed the drive.

The California comes equipped with side protection as part of the park assist package. Monitors constantly check the vehicle’s sides and will alert you with visual and audible warnings if you get too close to hedges, walls, or pedestrians. Additionally, it features crosswind assist, which is particularly appropriate for my journey. This function is part of the electronic stabilization system and applies the brakes if your vehicle is affected by strong winds.

Our spirits remained high despite the gloomy weather, buoyed by a quick stop for refreshments and a visit to the bathroom at the halfway point. The lack of an on-board toilet did weigh on my mind, especially as the wind and rain intensified. It never felt more fitting to answer the call of nature. Oh well.

The drive south was comfortable and steady, thanks to the purring diesel engine. We parked the vehicle in a way that shielded the rear from the brunt of the wind and rain and scanned the surroundings for signs of better weather. Instead of driving the short distance to the restaurant where we had a table booked for 7pm, we decided to wait for a lull in the weather before making a dash for dinner.

We received a warm welcome at the restaurant, and we were treated like royalty. Our table was positioned perfectly for a front-row view of the rugby match. As we indulged in delicious Greek food, we forgot about everything else, including our damp clothes, as we celebrated Ireland’s victory.

The Volkswagen California can accommodate up to four people (with the option to expand loft space in the roof). It offers plenty of room for a comfortable stay, although one night was enough for us. The next morning, we set off, eagerly anticipating a delicious breakfast en route.

During our journey down, I spotted a promising place to stop for breakfast, and it certainly lived up to expectations. Parking was a bit tight, but the car was a breeze to maneuver.

So, would I buy the Volkswagen California? Not this particular model, especially considering the steep price. However, the Grand version has spoiled me. But you know what? I think I’ve caught the camper bug. There’s something special about having your own place to stay no matter where you go.

For families, couples, or anyone looking to explore the country at their own pace without racking up expensive hotel bills or dining out costs, a camper van offers a fantastic alternative. Roll on next summer!
