The Prosecution: Jenny
Jared’s excessive obsession with staying hydrated is cringe-inducing and unnecessary. Even though he’s always been a gym nut, his move to a hot country has taken his hydration obsession to the next level. Now, he carries a three-litre water container with him everywhere, which I call “the tank”. It’s green and ridiculous-looking.
Jared claims that the tank helps him reach his goal of drinking four litres of water a day, but I believe that’s too much for anyone. He argues that the hot weather and his weight-lifting sessions cause him to lose more electrolytes and salts, which is why he carries around more water. However, if he forgets the tank, it becomes a huge emergency for him and he gets cranky like a baby without its bottle. I find it funny but a little extreme.
The tank is always by Jared’s side. It’s next to the bed, in the car, and even at the beach. When we’re at home, he hooks it onto a strap around his body while walking around. The most annoying part is when we go to cafes and restaurants and he plonks the tank on the table. Instead of accepting the water offered by the waiter, he insists on using his own water from the flask. I find this behavior abnormal and cringe-inducing.
Although service in our new country is more relaxed and no one says anything, I believe it’s unnecessary and cumbersome for Jared to bring the tank everywhere. He claims it helps him track his water intake, but I think he should put the bottle away, especially in nicer places. I don’t mind if he hits his targets, but I’d prefer if he could just enjoy the water served at the restaurant when we’re out.
The Defence: Jared
Hydration is a crucial aspect of my daily routine, even if Jenny finds it boring. I like to ensure that I meet all my nutrition and water goals every day. Not only do I keep track of my protein, fats, and carbs intake, but I also carry my flask of water, which Jenny mockingly calls “the tank”.
However, the tank is great for the environment because I don’t buy plastic water bottles, and it helps me stay hydrated throughout the day. Drinking four litres of water is normal for me due to my level of activity and the hotter climate we now live in. I do sweat it all out. Since moving here, I’ve had more time to focus on my fitness, hence why I bought the tank.
I bring the tank everywhere with me, even to restaurants, but I don’t think it’s rude to show up equipped with my own water. After all, who would ask you to leave a place just because you brought water? It’s not like I’m smuggling anything illegal. Although Jenny rolls her eyes, I haven’t received any negative feedback from others, so I don’t plan on stopping unless asked.
The flask is always hanging off my hip, and I use it throughout the day to ensure proper hydration. Of course, I’d leave it at home if we’re at a fancy restaurant, but in most places, it’s not an issue. I pour my own water because sometimes it contains vitamins that I want to consume fully before drinking other water. I understand Jenny’s concerns, but no one else seems to mind, so I’ll continue until told otherwise.
