WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden enthusiastically welcomed the news of job growth released on Friday, but cautioned about the potential economic consequences if House Republicans fail to pass a funding bill to prevent a government shutdown next month.
“For the past 20 months, the unemployment rate has consistently remained below 4%, which is the longest stretch in 50 years,” stated Biden at the White House.
“This is not a coincidence; it’s the result of Bidenomics,” expressed the Democratic president, who is currently campaigning for reelection next year.
In September, nonfarm payrolls saw an increase of 336,000 jobs, surpassing the Dow Jones consensus estimate of 170,000 and exceeding the previous month’s figure by more than 100,000, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
The unemployment rate stood at 3.8%, slightly higher compared to the projected rate of 3.7%.
This jobs report demonstrates the most significant monthly growth since January.
Biden cautioned about the potential fallout the country would face if the House fails to pass longer-term appropriations bills before the current continuing resolution expires next month.
“House Republicans should not plunge us back into a crisis,” warned Biden.
“We have a mere 40 days for Congress to reconvene — while House Republicans are currently on recess — to ensure government funding, prevent a shutdown, and safeguard the significant progress Americans have achieved over the past two and a half years.”
Earlier this week, the House removed Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) from his position as speaker, marking the very first time a speaker has been ousted.
Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida and other hardline Republicans orchestrated McCarthy’s removal due to his collaboration with Democrats in passing a continuing resolution last weekend, thereby avoiding a government shutdown.
Until Republicans rally behind a new speaker, the House is temporarily paralyzed from taking any action on new matters.
“Enough with the games,” urged Biden on Friday.
“House Republicans, it is time for you to fulfill your responsibilities and continue our endeavors in growing the economy and investing in America, investing in the American people. So let us get to work for the American people. They are waiting, and they are watching. We must take action.”
Biden expressed his willingness to collaborate with whomever ultimately assumes the role of speaker of the House.
“They control half of Congress, and I will make an effort to cooperate with them,” acknowledged Biden. “While some individuals may pose more challenges than others, I am committed to working with the speaker.”
