Closing the North-South Gap: Analyzing the HS2 Cancellation Perspective by The Guardian | Editor’s Opinion

When it comes to promoting himself as a leader focused on long-term decisions for the national benefit, Rishi Sunak falls short with his recent decision. As he flew into Granada for the European political community summit, Sunak may have taken note of the city’s efficient high-speed train service. However, Granada is not the only city in Spain with such a fantastic network. In fact, Spain boasts the largest high-speed rail system in Europe, with over 4,300km of track in operation and another 1,370km under construction. Unfortunately, Britain’s high-speed rail network pales in comparison, with only 113km in operation and, before Sunak’s recent cancellation of the northern arm of HS2, a mere 220km under construction. This stark contrast reveals that while high-speed rail has been a triumph for Spain, it has been nothing short of a disaster for Britain.

Now, it’s true that Spain is a larger and less densely populated country, while Britain is smaller and more crowded. However, the differences in governance and project management also play a significant role. Spain provided its state railway infrastructure company with the necessary funding to construct the high-speed rail lines. Britain, on the other hand, embarked on a journey of starting, stopping, hesitating, re-examining, and ultimately canceling the HS2 project. This systemic failure has hindered progress and left Britain far behind.

In conclusion, Rishi Sunak’s self-proclaimed leadership in making long-term decisions for the national benefit is called into question by his recent actions. Instead of following the successful path taken by Spain, Britain has stumbled and faltered, resulting in a high-speed rail infrastructure that is nowhere near as robust. It’s time for a change in approach if Britain wants to catch up and prioritize projects that will truly benefit the nation.
