Goodbye to COVID-19 Vaccination Cards: Latest Updates and What’s Next

In a move that has surprised many, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced that they will no longer distribute the little white cards that served as proof of COVID-19 vaccination. These cards were once required at certain establishments such as restaurants, theaters, gyms, and international border crossings. CNN reports that going forward, individuals who wish to have a record of their immunizations will need to contact their state health department’s immunization information system. Alternatively, they can reach out to their primary care physician for a new card if needed.

As for drugstores that administer the vaccine, CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, and Rite Aid have stated that no vaccine card will be necessary in the future to receive booster shots. However, if individuals want their shots to be added to their existing card, they can still do so. VeryWell Health reported in August that while vaccine cards are no longer frequently required, it is advisable for individuals to keep them as part of their medical records. Although most countries, including the US, no longer mandate proof of vaccination for entry, travelers are still advised to double-check the requirements. (Read more COVID-19 stories.)
