The federal authorities have accused a 62-year-old Department of Defense employee of being involved in an illegal dog fighting ring.

Frederick Douglass Moorefield, a deputy chief information officer for command, control, and communications for the Office of the Secretary of Defense, has been charged along with Mario Damon Flythe, a 49-year-old barber.

Both men are alleged to have used Telegram, an encrypted messaging application, to coordinate dog fights.

According to the affidavit, Moorefield and his associates discussed topics such as training methods for illegal dogfighting and ways to avoid arrest for arranging these fights.

During the search of Moorefield’s Maryland home on September 6, authorities found a device consisting of jumper cables attached to an electrical plug, which may have been used to electrocute dogs after they lost a fight.

Additionally, five pit bull-type dogs, a dog training schedule, and a weighted dog vest with the words “Geehad Kennels” were discovered at Moorefield’s residence.

The investigating authorities also found a stained gray carpet that appeared to have blood stains from multiple dogfights.

The affidavit revealed that Moorefield had been involved in dog fights since 2002, as indicated by his phone and online records.

Moorefield and Flythe have been released pending trial after their arraignment. If convicted, they could each face a maximum sentence of five years.

Pentagon spokesperson Tim Gorman stated to The Washington Post that Moorefield is “no longer in the workplace,” without specifying if he has been fired or suspended.

Insider has reached out to the Department of Defense for comment but has not received an immediate response.
