In order to support a healthier lifestyle and promote active transportation, Riverside County students, staff, and families will participate in International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, Oct. 4, as announced by the Riverside University Health System Public Health on Monday.
This one-day event is part of a global initiative to celebrate the numerous health benefits of walking and biking to school. It also aims to encourage families to forgo the use of minivans and embrace healthy changes that can be sustained throughout the year.
“While this event is just for one day, we hope that our community will recognize the advantages of walking and biking to school and adopt it as an everyday habit,” said Kim Saruwatari, the director for RUHS-PH, who oversees the program locally.
Several students, parents, and community-based volunteers from all over Riverside County will collaborate to form “walking school buses.” These groups, consisting of children, parents, and volunteers, will walk together to school. Approximately 40 schools in Riverside County have registered to take part in the program, with other schools implementing their own initiatives.
Drivers should exercise caution on the morning of October 4th, as there will be an increased number of pedestrians walking to school. They should be prepared to stop for children crossing the street.
International Walk to School Day serves as a starting point for a year-long endeavor to establish sustainable walking and biking programs, which aim to enhance fitness levels, improve air quality, and reduce traffic congestion around schools, ultimately increasing student safety.
The Safe Routes for All program at RUHS-PH coordinates this event and it is sponsored by a combination of public agencies, police departments, city governments, and community organizations.
