The San Francisco Giants fire manager Gabe Kapler after failing to make the postseason for the third time in four attempts, as announced by the team on Friday.
The team’s executive, Farhan Zaidi, released the following statement:
“After presenting this recommendation to the ownership and receiving their approval, I met with Gabe today to inform him of our decision. During his time as manager of the Giants, Gabe guided our team through the unprecedented challenges of the 2020 pandemic and led us to a franchise-record 107 wins and a postseason berth in 2021. He has shown dedication and passion in his efforts to improve the on-field performance of the San Francisco Giants, and I have immense respect for him as a colleague and friend.”
“I consider myself fortunate to have managed the San Francisco Giants,” Kapler wrote on his Instagram account on Saturday. “There were numerous debates and challenging conversations every day, and that’s what makes it inspiring because it’s real. I felt like I had the opportunity to help people grow, and they helped me grow as well, and I am grateful for that chance.”
Kapler, who is 48 years old, led the Giants to the playoffs in 2021 after an outstanding regular season with 107 wins. However, apart from that remarkable season, the Giants had a .500 record during the other three years of Kapler’s tenure. San Francisco was in contention for a playoff spot this season but suffered a disappointing second half, ending the year with three consecutive losing months. This decline, particularly in September, seemingly influenced the club’s decision to part ways with Kapler.
In fact, Giants owner Greg Johnson had previously indicated in mid-September that Kapler would be returning in 2024 alongside Zaidi. However, Zaidi recently expressed doubts about retaining Kapler during a radio interview, instead stating, “We need to seriously consider if we were prepared to raise our level of focus and play during the crucial games towards the end of the season.”
The argument to replace Kapler was likely strengthened by media reports highlighting the Giants’ excessively relaxed clubhouse atmosphere.
Prior to joining the Giants, Kapler served as the manager of the Philadelphia Phillies for two seasons, where he compiled a record of 161-163 without leading the team to the playoffs.
The Giants will be among several teams searching for a new manager this offseason. Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell, who becomes a free agent, is widely regarded as the most attractive candidate for the managerial position.
