The layoffs at Mowi’s base in Rinmore near Fanad, north Donegal have caused quite a stir. As the company ends secondary fish processing in Ireland, 33 staff members have been impacted by redundancy. The firm had employed 265 people in Ireland prior to these job cuts.
Mowi cited warmer than normal sea temperatures impacting salmon fishing in Ireland as the reason for the layoffs. The company experienced a decrease in fish harvested, from 1,500 tonnes in the previous year to just 500 tonnes in the fourth quarter of 2022. This decline was attributed to higher than normal sea temperatures during the summer and autumn, along with harmful phytoplankton and zooplankton blooms along the coast.
Mowi has expressed its gratitude to the affected staff members and is offering training opportunities, one-on-one career guidance, and financial support. The company is also working with the local social welfare office to provide on-site assistance. Despite the layoffs, Mowi Ireland plans to grow other aspects of its operations later in the year, maintaining a positive and healthy outlook.
With global sales of €4.9bn in 2022, Mowi operates in 26 countries and employs 11,500 people worldwide. In Ireland, the company’s turnover reached €72m.
