House Urgently Delivers 45-Day Extension to Senate, Just Moments Before Deadline

The House of Representatives has approved a last-minute proposal from Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Saturday, aimed at extending the funding for the federal government for an additional 45 days. However, it is now up to the Senate to decide whether there will be a government shutdown. The bill, which received a 335-91 vote in favor, includes funding for disaster relief and other domestic priorities, but it does not include any money to assist Ukraine in its fight against the Russian invasion, according to the Washington Post. The Senate has not yet scheduled a vote on this matter. If both chambers do not approve a plan by 12:01am on Sunday, the shutdown will go into effect.

Despite the fact that money for Ukraine is a major concern for House Democrats, more of them supported McCarthy’s plan compared to Republicans. The Democrats wanted to avoid criticism for prioritizing financial assistance to Ukraine over the functioning of US agencies and the payment of 2 million service members and 1.5 million federal workers, as reported by the New York Times. White House officials have expressed their support for the House’s proposal, especially because it did not involve significant cuts to domestic programs, according to the Post. Senate Democrats have informed the Times that they anticipate a vote to be held early in the evening.
