MANILA, Philippines — National University (NU) guard Kean Baclaan felt a surge of confidence as he woke up on the morning of their game against defending champion Ateneo in the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament. He believes that the kind of confidence instilled by coach Jeff Napa was pivotal in their victory.

As Baclaan and the Bulldogs stunned the Blue Eagles with a 77-64 triumph, he emphasized that they approached the game with the mindset that Ateneo’s championship reign was behind them and that this was a new season.

“I just knew as soon as I woke up that we were going to win. That’s the kind of confidence coach Jeff gives us. Going into this game, we don’t think about them (Ateneo) being the defending champions. This is a different season,” Baclaan stated.

The sophomore guard was instrumental in their victory, contributing eight assists along with four points and four rebounds. NU unleashed a balanced attack, led by Patrick Yu and Steve Nash Enriquez.

“I guess I was able to set my teammates up
