Seven years later, an extraordinary drawing has transformed into reality: a remarkable spherical venue worth $2.3 billion that now stands tall at 366 feet (111 meters) high, illuminating the vibrant Las Vegas skyline. The original concept was conceived by James Dolan, the executive chair of Madison Square Garden and owner of the New York Knicks and Rangers. Alongside David Dibble, CEO of MSG Ventures, Dolan sought to revolutionize the entertainment venue industry in Las Vegas. They experimented with various shapes, from a muffin to a box and even a pyramid, until Dolan sketched a circle and a stick person in his notebook. It was at that moment that the Sphere was born.
Dolan’s incredible vision finally materialized with the commencement of U2’s “UV Achtung Baby” residency, marking the grand opening of this state-of-the-art, technologically advanced, globe-shaped venue. Dolan stated during a media walkthrough, “It truly is a new medium. When you’re inside the Sphere, you have the power to decide what captures your attention. It’s an empowering experience for the audience.”
Situated within the 516-foot-wide (157-meter-wide) Sphere is a high-resolution LED screen that wraps halfway around the 17,500-seat audience. The venue boasts thousands of speakers to deliver a crystal-clear, multi-layered audio experience. The Sphere flaunts an array of technological attractions, including the presence of five interactive humanoid robots named Aura. Dibble, who cherished Dolan’s original drawing, commented, “Necessity is the mother of invention. Everything, from our audio and networking systems to visual displays and camera setups, has been carefully designed to ensure an extraordinary Sphere experience.”
This extraordinary venue has become a captivating spectacle, particularly after nightfall. It grabbed immediate attention on the Fourth of July with a spellbinding digital fireworks display. An eyeball seemingly scanned the horizon with the phrase “Hello World.” The Sphere also delighted crowds with projections of the Earth and Moon, bouncing basketballs, and captivating art designs. It even showcased characters from the upcoming animated film “Trolls Band Together” on its LED exterior and celebrated the release of NSYNC’s latest single “Better Place,” which features on the movie’s soundtrack.
Architecture professor Glenn NP Nowak from the nearby University of Nevada, Las Vegas expressed his awe, stating, “That’s cool. It’s like words can’t describe it.” The Sphere bears resemblance to the Spaceship Earth attraction at Walt Disney World’s Epcot theme park in Florida. Its design has drawn parallels to the Montreal Biosphere museum in Canada and the Avicii Arena in Sweden.
While it may not tower over the iconic Las Vegas Strip like the 520-foot (158-meter) High Roller observation wheel that Caesars Entertainment introduced in 2014 or the 1,149-foot (350-meter) tower at the Strat Hotel & Casino, which opened in 1996, the Sphere remains the most expensive entertainment venue constructed in Las Vegas, surpassing the approximately $1.9 billion Allegiant Stadium that opened in 2020.
Nowak, who toured the structure with his students during its construction, praised it as an “engineering marvel” and noted its position at the forefront of Las Vegas’ emerging “experience economy.” Las Vegas attracts over 40 million visitors annually, drawn to its renowned gambling scene, nightlife, spas, entertainment shows, and fine dining. Most visitors arrive via Harry Reid International Airport, which served nearly 53 million passengers in 2022.
Dolan remarked, “This was the ideal market. This marketplace thrives on growth. They embraced the idea of having a massive spherical light fixture right in its heart. This market adores light, shows, and entertainment. The Sphere encapsulates all of those elements. The government here was incredibly supportive and encouraging.”
Initially, the project was a collaboration with casino company Las Vegas Sands, who were then the owners of the Venetian and Palazzo resort towers on the Las Vegas Strip. Today, the 35-story Venetian and 50-story Palazzo, with over 7,000 rooms combined, proudly advertise panoramic views of the Sphere from their guest rooms.
Dolan revealed that casino owners initially viewed the venue as just another arena. He said, “The casino owners were concerned about losing out on entertainment opportunities, so they needed their own venue. But at some point, we made it clear that this was no ordinary arena. They wholeheartedly embraced the concept.”
Dolan envisions numerous cities around the world embracing the concept of the Sphere and has aspirations of constructing one in London. He even dreams of building a Sphere in his hometown of New York. However, for now, Dolan’s primary focus is proving that the Sphere is an unprecedented success. He stated confidently, “I feel tremendous pride in what we’ve built. I believe it will be a triumph, and people will be enamored by it. I am no longer as anxious as I once was.”
