Biden’s Controversial Drilling Deal Sparks Dissatisfaction Among Critics

In a move that has caused dissatisfaction among both the oil industry and environmental advocates, the Biden administration has taken a moderate stance on offshore oil lease sales, with critics claiming that the president is reneging on his campaign promise. According to Politico, the Interior Department announced the fewest offshore oil lease sales ever under its program, with no sale being offered in 2024. This marks the first time in four decades that companies will be unable to bid for drilling rights in the Gulf of Mexico or off the coast of Alaska.

Following a series of 11 lease sales over five years, there will only be one lease scheduled in each of the three years: 2025, 2027, and 2029. This is the minimum requirement stipulated by the Inflation Reduction Act, which was introduced by Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia. The New York Times reports that under the 2022 law, the government must offer 60 million acres offshore for oil and gas leasing before permitting wind farms in federal waters. Manchin joined the voices criticizing the decision, accusing the Biden administration of pursuing a “radical political agenda” with such limited sales.

Despite President Biden’s campaign promise of “no new drilling, period” on public lands or federal waters, he has faced obstacles from Congress and the courts, as reported by the Times. However, all sides have expressed disappointment with Biden’s decision. The Center for American Progress, while calling it disappointing, views the reduction in leases as a step forward. The head of the American Petroleum Institute raised objections, stating that “This restrictive offshore leasing program is the latest tactic in a coordinated strategy to reduce energy production.” An environmental group in New Orleans highlighted the impact of drilling on the health of nearby residents.
