Hyundai and Kia have issued a recall for nearly 3.4 million vehicles due to the potential risk of engine compartment fires. As a precaution, owners are being advised to park their vehicles outside.
According to documents posted by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a leak in the anti-lock brake control module can lead to an electrical short, which can cause a fire. This fire risk exists whether the vehicles are parked or in motion.
The documents recommend that owners park their vehicles outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. The dealers will replace the ABS fuse in the affected models free of charge.
The recall covers various car and SUV models manufactured between 2010 and 2019, including Hyundai’s Santa Fe SUV and Kia’s Sorrento SUV. Kia plans to send notification letters to owners starting on November 14, while Hyundai’s letters will be sent out on November 21.
In a statement, Hyundai stated that owners can continue to drive their vehicles, as no crashes or injuries have been reported. The recall affects 1,642,551 vehicles in the U.S. and 326,942 in Canada.
Kia, in a statement to the AP, acknowledged that an engine compartment fire can occur due to an electrical short, but the cause is still unknown. The company emphasized that no injuries have been reported thus far.
According to NHTSA, the companies have 60 days to notify owners of the recalled vehicles via mail. However, the mailings often occur sooner than the deadline.
