A Los Angeles Police Department officer has been charged with grand theft by embezzlement for allegedly fraudulently collecting overtime pay in 2022, authorities said Friday.
According to a statement released by the LAPD, Isabel Morales, 32, was charged with the felony count following an investigation by the LAPD’s Internal Affairs Division into overtime usage, prompted by the officer’s commanding officer who noticed unusual activity.
Morales was subpoenaed in February 2022 for a murder trial, serving on an “on call” basis. The trial concluded on March 8, 2022, and Morales was no longer required to be on call. However, it is alleged that the officer falsely claimed to be “on call” more than 70 times, including court holidays, for the same trial between March 10, 2022, and July 15, 2022. This resulted in Morales fraudulently earning over $15,000 in overtime pay, as stated by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
An arraignment date for Morales is yet to be scheduled.
Furthermore, Morales had previously been relieved of duty and was directed to face a Board of Rights hearing with a recommendation for termination, as stated by the LAPD’s statement.
LAPD Chief Michel Moore emphasized in the statement, “There is no place in this department for dishonesty. We have taken every action to hold this officer accountable for their misconduct.”
