The Philippine Pride in International Sports
A study conducted in 2007 by the International Social Survey Programme (issp.org) examined the topic of Sports and Leisure in 33 countries, including the Philippines. The survey asked respondents about their pride in the Philippines’ performance in international sports or games competitions.
The options for response were as follows:
- Aking talagang ipinagmamalaki (I am very proud)
- Aking medyo ipinagmamalaki (I am somewhat proud)
- Aking hindi masyadong ipinagmamalaki (I am not very proud)
- Aking talagang hindi ipinagmamalaki (I am not proud at all)
- Hindi makapili (Can’t choose)
For the Philippines, the survey conducted by Social Weather Stations on 3/30-4/2/2008 revealed the following percentages among national adults: Very Proud 74%, Somewhat Proud 19%, Not Very Proud 5%, Not At All Proud 2%, Can’t Choose 1%. The Philippines ranked third among the 33 countries, with the highest percentage of Very Proud respondents.
It is worth noting that Filipinos take pride in various international sports achievements. From boxing champion Manny Pacquiao to billiards “magician” Efren “Bata” Reyes, the Philippines has produced notable athletes in different sports disciplines. There are also successes in bowling, chess, and even unconventional sports like arnis (stick-fighting) and cockfighting.
The survey results showed that both male and female respondents share similar levels of pride. Across different age groups, the highest level of pride was among the 35-44 age bracket. Geographically, the National Capital Region had the highest percentage of Very Proud respondents at 82%, followed by Balance Luzon (77%), Visayas (67%), and Mindanao (69%).
In terms of government support for Philippine sports, the survey found 47% of respondents agreeing that the government should spend more, while 35% disagreed. This indicates a plurality in favor of increased government spending on sports.
While Filipinos take pride in their sports achievements, it is important to address potential barriers to further success, such as political obstacles faced by athletes, like the denial of passports for political reasons.
