MANILA, Philippines — CJ Cansino is all set to lead the University of the Philippines one final time as he makes a comeback from an ACL injury in the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament.
The fit-again guard is thankful to be able to continue playing basketball after recovering from his second ACL injury last year during the Fighting Maroons’ historic title run in Season 84, where he persevered through pain and hit a crucial three-pointer in Game 3 against Ateneo to end a 36-year title drought.
“I’m overjoyed not only about the UAAP but also to be able to play basketball again. I can pursue my childhood dream once more,” Cansino told reporters in Filipino.
Cansino was sidelined during Season 85 and was unable to assist his team in their championship defense as the Blue Eagles sought revenge in December and reclaimed the title.
The senior Fighting Maroon promised to come back stronger after the loss, and he showcased his remarkable progress by leading UP to a FilOil championship.
“I feel the pressure and excitement. I have mixed feelings about this season, but I’m incredibly excited to play,” said Cansino, who experienced his first ACL injury in 2018 during his rookie year with the University of Santo Tomas.
