Breaking News: Suzanne Morphew’s Remains Discovered in Colorado After Exhaustive 3-Year Search

The remains of Suzanne Morphew, a missing Colorado wife and mother who disappeared during a Mother’s Day bike ride near her home more than three years ago, have been discovered, authorities revealed on Wednesday.

Agents with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation found Morphew’s remains last Friday while conducting a search near Moffat as part of an unrelated investigation, according to authorities who announced in a news release.

The location where the remains were found is approximately 44 miles south of Salida, in Chaffee County, where Morphew, a 49-year-old mother of two, was reported missing on May 10, 2020.

While no new arrests have been made in the case, authorities declined to provide specific details about the condition of the remains or the location where they were discovered. Chaffee County Sheriff John Spezze stated that there are no plans for a press conference at this time.

“Although the discovery of Suzanne’s remains is a crucial development in this investigation and for her family, it raises more questions than answers. Therefore, holding a news conference at this time would not be appropriate,” Sheriff Spezze said in a statement released by the CBI.

A year after his wife’s disappearance, Morphew’s husband, Barry Morphew, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder and other charges related to her case. Prosecutors claimed he killed her after discovering she was having an extramarital affair.

However, the charges against him were dropped early last year after the prosecutors were reprimanded by a judge for violating discovery rules. In May, Barry Morphew filed a $15 million federal civil rights lawsuit, claiming wrongful arrest, imprisonment, and prosecution in his wife’s death.

Although the murder charges can be refiled by the district attorney in the future since the case was dismissed without prejudice, The Denver Post reported at the time, there have been no updates regarding a new trial.

Barry Morphew was arrested in 2021 in connection with the disappearance of his wife, Suzanne Morphew. Those charges were later dropped.

Barry Morphew’s attorney described the recovery of Suzanne Morphew’s remains as “heartbreaking” and stated that he and the couple’s two daughters are struggling with shock and grief. Attorney Iris Eytan, in a statement shared with HuffPost, said, “They had hoped that their wife and mother would return to their lives again. The [district attorney] and the authorities did not inform Mallory and Macy Morphew about the recovery of their mother.”

Eytan expressed the family’s desire for the responsible party to be charged and expressed hope that the authorities will acknowledge their wrongful persecution of Barry, an innocent man.
