Hyundai and Kia Recall Over 3.4 Million Vehicles in the U.S. and Canada Due to Fire Risk
Hyundai and Kia have issued a massive recall of 3.4 million vehicles in the U.S. and 603,167 vehicles in Canada. The recall is due to a potential short-circuit that could cause a fire in the engine compartment. As a precaution, owners are advised to park their vehicles outside until the necessary repairs are completed.
According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Transport Canada, certain Hyundai vehicles are experiencing a brake fluid leak that can lead to a short-circuit in the control module for the antilock brake system (ABS). Kia vehicles, on the other hand, have a risk of short-circuiting in the brake hydraulic electronic control unit (HECU), although the exact cause is still unknown.
While Hyundai and Kia have reported 53 incidents of fires or thermal incidents, they have stated that no crashes or injuries related to the defect have been reported. Owners can continue to drive their vehicles, but they are urged to take them to a dealership for a free replacement of the anti-lock brake fuse.
However, there have been questions raised about why the automakers are only replacing the fuse instead of fixing the underlying fluid leak. The nonprofit Center for Auto Safety has highlighted this issue, stating that the real problem lies in the O-ring and the leak that causes the short-circuit. They argue that simply replacing the fuse does not address the root design issue.
The affected Hyundai models in Canada include the Accent, Elantra, Equus, Genesis Coupe, Santa Fe, Santa Fe Sport, Tucson, and Veracruz. The Kia models involved in the recall are the Borrego, Cadenza, Forte, Forte Koup, K900, Optima, Rio, Rondo, Sorento, Soul, and Sportage. Owners can check online at Transport Canada using their VIN to see if their vehicle is affected.
