The highly-anticipated second-generation BMW X2 is on its way, and our eagle-eyed spies have already caught a glimpse of pre-production prototypes during testing. But now, a tantalizing dark preview image has surfaced, giving us the most revealing look yet at the forthcoming crossover. Set to make its long-awaited debut before the end of 2023, the updated model will boast significant design enhancements that are sure to impress.
Recently shared on the official social media channels of the German automaker, the captivating image strongly suggests that the next X2 will feature a more eye-catching front end design. Notably, the grille will be larger and will be surrounded by two C-shaped LED strips, creating a distinctive lighting signature that will make the vehicle impossible to miss, even in the darkest of nights. Additionally, the vehicle showcases sophisticated swept-back lights with vertically-oriented LED accents and a meticulously crafted hood accentuated by two creases, which elegantly converge near the middle of the grille.
While BMW has remained tight-lipped about specific details, the aforementioned spy shots confirm that the X2 is on the verge of a transformative makeover. The current-generation model already embodies a sporty design that distinguishes it from its sibling, the X1. However, its successor is poised to move closer to the larger X4 and X6 models, adopting a sleek fastback-like roof line that is sure to capture attention and earn the coveted “four-door coupe” designation. Moving to the rear, it’s evident that a large hatch and horizontal lights will be present, though the overall design remains partially concealed beneath camouflage.
As for the interior, we will have to exercise patience until more details emerge. Currently, the X2 exclusively offers four-cylinder engine options, with no straight-six available, even if one were to make a polite request. At this point, there is no indication that this engine configuration will change. Additionally, select variants will be offered with a hybrid powertrain, and certain markets can expect to see an electric version, potentially named the iX2, joining the lineup.
BMW plans to gradually reveal additional information about the highly-anticipated next-generation X2 in the coming months. While unconfirmed reports suggest that the crossover will officially debut before the conclusion of 2023, it is likely that it will arrive in showrooms several months later, ultimately being available for purchase as a 2025 model.
