Working in the tech industry means dealing with endless questions. One question that comes up frequently is, “Kim, was my computer hacked?” The answer is, maybe. There are certain signs that indicate your system may have been compromised. However, not every situation is as scary as it seems. For example, many people wonder, “Kim, how do I scan stuff with my phone?” Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered.

Recently, I received a text from an unknown number that I felt like I should know, but it wasn’t saved in my phone. Luckily, I have a smart trick that helped me find out who it was. I’m going to share that trick and other solutions to common tech problems below.

Unmask a mystery caller or texter

Instead of simply replying with a question like, “Who is this?” I have a helpful hack that you’ll find yourself using over and over again. TikTokker Liz Perez shared this hack on her channel, and it went viral.

If you receive a text from an unknown number, mobile payment apps like Venmo, CashApp, Zelle, or PayPal can assist you in finding out who it is. Simply copy and paste the number into one of these apps, and you might just uncover the mystery sender’s name.

Keep in mind that this hack only works if you have an account with one of these mobile payment apps, and the sender must also be using their real name and number in the app. Nevertheless, it’s better than taking a shot in the dark.

Pro-tip: Make sure to disable your mobile payment app from sharing your name and phone number with others. The steps to do this may vary depending on the app. For example, in Venmo, you can go to Settings, then Friends and Social, and toggle off Phone contacts.

Find your car, no matter where you are

Have you ever found yourself wandering around a parking lot, desperately searching for your car? Well, here’s a handy trick that Google Maps offers to help you easily locate your parking spot — automatically. Remember this the next time you go to the mall.

For iPhone or Android:

  1. Open the Google Maps app.
  2. Tap on the blue dot that indicates your location.
  3. Tap “Save parking.”

Google Maps will save your parking location until you decide to remove it. Now, all you have to do is remember where you put your keys.

Easy internet sleuth trick

Have you ever come across a website that promises you a free trip to Hawaii or some other incredible offer? Before providing the website with your personal information and credit card details, make sure you’re not being scammed.

A WHOIS lookup search allows you to check a database that contains information about domain names and their registrants. This way, you can find out who owns the website and see if they have a legitimate business address and contact information.

Here’s how to perform a WHOIS lookup:

  1. Visit a WHOIS lookup website. There are many available on the web, but I personally use who.is.
  2. Enter the URL of the website you want to investigate into the search bar.
  3. You’ll then be able to see the owner of the website and their contact information, including address and phone number.

Stop sharing your number with everyone

It’s incredibly easy for your phone number to end up on a marketing list, whether you made a purchase or simply made a phone call. Fortunately, there’s a way to stop this, and it’s something you should definitely consider.

One option is to use *67, which hides your landline or cell number. Simply dial star, 6 and 7, followed by the number you’re calling, and that’s it. The person you’re calling will see “Private” or “Blocked.” The only downside is that you have to do this for every call.

If you always want your number to be hidden, you can change the caller ID setting on your smartphone. On an iPhone, go to Settings > Phone > Show My Caller ID, and toggle it off. On Android, the option is called Hide Number.

Alternatively, you can ask your carrier to hide your number or use a burner app like Google Voice or Hushed. Here’s a guide to help you set that up.
