Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky Optimistic About US Support for Additional Aid
In an interview with a group of US journalists, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed optimism about US Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s support for additional assistance for Ukraine. Zelensky described his meeting with McCarthy as positive and mentioned that they understand each other well.
Zelensky quoted McCarthy as saying, “They will be on our side—it’s not simple—that they will support.” However, McCarthy’s office did not respond to The Hill’s request for comment.
During his visit to Washington, Zelensky met with Congress, the Pentagon, and President Biden. However, he faced opposition from Republican hard-liners who used his visit to demonstrate their opposition to aid for Ukraine.
Furthermore, a group of House Republicans stalled efforts to pass a Defense spending bill, with Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) voting against the measure because it included security assistance for Ukraine.
Regarding the provision of long-range missile systems to Ukraine, Zelensky expressed optimism, stating that they are crucial for Ukrainian forces to counter Russia’s aggression. Zelensky specifically mentioned the Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), which have a range of nearly 190 miles and can threaten Russian positions in occupied Crimea.
When asked if Ukraine would receive the missiles, Zelensky replied, “We have to. I think yes… Because we don’t have another way out.”
Zelensky stressed the importance of Ukrainian forces pushing forward, even during the winter. He emphasized that a pause in fighting would allow Russian President Vladimir Putin to restock, resupply, and reinforce his military.
Retaking Bakhmut, a city claimed as a major victory by Russian propaganda in May, is a key objective for Ukraine. Zelensky revealed that Ukrainian forces have a comprehensive plan to liberate more territory, but he did not disclose the details.
Despite the challenges faced by Ukraine, Zelensky maintained a positive outlook. He emphasized the importance of global unity and support for Ukraine amidst domestic concerns in some countries and global crises that divert attention and resources.
Zelensky also highlighted the positive outcomes of bilateral meetings, particularly with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Building closer relations between Ukraine and Israel would help counter Iran, which poses a threat to both countries.
Speaking about his meeting with Netanyahu, Zelensky stated, “I’m happy with meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu… It’s good for Ukraine. But I really think that is even better for Israel because there is a dangerous moment, and we have to be very serious with Iran.”
However, Zelensky emphasized that the most crucial relationship is with the United States. He expressed gratitude towards America for its support and highlighted the event he presided over at the National Archives, which honored American volunteers who have donated their time and resources to Ukraine.
Zelensky concluded by stating, “There’s not a single Ukrainian who doesn’t feel gratitude for America. America has saved Ukrainian lives.”
Overall, Zelensky’s visit to Washington and his meetings with US officials have provided hope for increased support and assistance for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia.
