Long Beach Health Director Kelly Colopy, who successfully guided the city through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, is set to leave for a similar role in Salt Lake County, Utah, as announced by the city on Tuesday.
“Kelly is an exceptional and inspiring leader who skillfully navigated us through unprecedented crises such as the pandemic, efforts to address systemic racism, homelessness, and various other public health emergencies,” said City Manager Tom Modica in a statement. “Her unwavering commitment and leadership as the director of Health and Human Services have left a lasting impact on Long Beach, both as a united community and an organization. We extend our best wishes to her as she embarks on her well-deserved new role in Salt Lake County.”
Colopy has been at the helm of the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services since 2013. It’s important to note that Long Beach operates its own municipal health department, separate from the county Department of Public Health.
City officials commend Colopy for her remarkable achievement in securing significant grant funding for the agency. She also played a pivotal role in establishing the first-ever municipal Office of Equity in Southern California. Additionally, she oversaw the creation of an Office of Youth Development, a Veterans Commission, and implemented services to address violence prevention and early childhood education.
“Leaving Long Beach is a bitter-sweet moment for me,” stated Colopy. “Long Beach has been my home for a decade, and I have cherished every moment. It has been a true privilege to serve as the Health and Human Services Director for the city. The department’s team members are devoted, passionate, caring, and exceptionally innovative — without them, none of this would have been possible.
“I am also grateful for the collaboration of the city’s leadership, other department directors, and community members who rallied together during these challenging times to build a healthy and resilient city. I thank each and every one of you.”
Colopy’s tenure with the city will conclude on Oct. 27. According to the city, she has been maintaining dual residency in Long Beach and Salt Lake City. In her new position, she will assume the role of director at the Salt Lake County Department of Human Services.
