Exclusive: Channel 4 and BBC Executives Confront Growing Controversy Surrounding Russell Brand, Promising Action at Major TV Event

Both broadcasters, Channel 4 and the BBC, are conducting investigations into the allegations against comedian and actor Russell Brand. They have also removed content featuring Brand from their platforms. Brand, who previously hosted shows on Channel 4 and worked on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 6 Music, has strongly denied the allegations. The chief executive of Channel 4, Alex Mahon, and the director-general of the BBC, Tim Davie, are expected to speak at the Royal Television Society (RTS) Cambridge Convention in 2023. The Culture, Media and Sport Committee chairwoman, Dame Caroline Dinenage, has written to broadcasters requesting further details on the actions they are taking in response to the allegations. Brand has been accused of rape, assault, and emotional abuse between 2006 and 2013, during his time working for the BBC and Channel 4. Banijay UK, the company that bought Endemol, which produced the Big Brother spin-off shows hosted by Brand, is also conducting a probe into his behavior. The BBC has announced a review into Brand’s time at the corporation, with an initial report expected in weeks. Both YouTube and Acast have stated that Brand will not make money from advertisements on their sites and apps. Brand still has a presence on video platform Rumble, where he hosts a weekly live show, but there was no new episode on Monday or Tuesday.
