Sept. 18 (UPI) — A captivating wallaby adventure unfolded in a tranquil Chicago suburb, as a furry fugitive ran free for several days before being happily reunited with its owner.
Josie Hange recounted the gripping tale of her wallaby, Rupert, who made a daring escape from their Monee residence on Tuesday, only to be eventually captured on camera outside a neighbor’s home on Friday.
“All of a sudden I looked out the window and there he was,” exclaimed Ken Zeilstra, the surprised neighbor, as he described the astonishing sight. “We don’t see things like that out here. It doesn’t happen.”
Hange expressed her gratitude for the footage, which provided valuable clues to her and the dedicated search party from the animal rescue group Tinley Park PAWS. They were able to meticulously track Rupert’s movements over the next 24 hours.
Finally, Hange caught up with her beloved wallaby on Saturday evening and managed to carefully guide him into a neighbor’s garage, breathing a sigh of relief. She conveyed her overwhelming emotions, stating, “I think that’s the most relief I’ve ever felt. We lose people to death, we lose people to weird circumstances. When it comes to animals — I know not everyone thinks the same way, but they become part of your family. You grow attached to them, you raise them. He is my baby. I have children, but he is my baby as well.”
Hange added that Rupert is now safe and sound at home, recovering from the excruciating experience. Although the wallaby is not injured, he has visibly lost weight and appears to be utterly exhausted.
