Nine Inmates Escape from Abraxas Academy Detention Center: Second Escape in Two Weeks
On Sunday evening, nine male teens successfully escaped from the Abraxas Academy detention center in Morgantown, Pennsylvania, creating panic among local residents. This incident comes just two weeks after another escape from a detention facility in the same state. Fortunately, all nine inmates were apprehended and placed back in custody by Monday morning.
The escape occurred when the young inmates, aged between 15 and 17, overpowered two female guards and stole the facility’s keys. They then slipped out through a side door and climbed under a fence. The local police initiated an overnight search with the assistance of approximately 60 authorities, including drones and K-9 units.
One of the inmates triggered an alarm by attempting to break into a car, leading to a tip received by the police. This breakthrough allowed them to locate and arrest four of the escaped teens near the detention center. The remaining five were apprehended shortly after, following a report of a stolen truck and trailer.
Trooper David Beohm of the State Police mentioned that the teens turned themselves in willingly, as they were exhausted and subjected to cold weather. He emphasized the contrast between their surroundings in the woods and the urban areas they are used to.
These young inmates will face charges for their escape, and they will also be interviewed to determine if additional charges are warranted. It remains uncertain whether they will be returned to the Abraxas Academy detention center.
This is the second major incident to occur at Abraxas Academy in recent months. In July, a fight among several teens escalated into a riot, which took the local police several hours to contain. The Academy, established in 1973, aims to provide a safe and trauma-informed treatment environment for at-risk youth and offers services to more than 7,000 young individuals and their families annually.
