Sept. 13 (UPI) — Witness the mesmerizing sight of the streets in a Portuguese town turning red, as a massive spill of nearly 600,000 gallons of wine flooded through the streets. The leakage occurred when two vats at the local Destilaria Levira distillery experienced a catastrophic burst.
Photos and videos captured by onlookers depict the surreal scene of red wine cascading through the alleys of São Lourenço do Bairro, Anadia.
No injuries were reported in this incident; however, one cellar was inundated with wine. The distillery promptly expressed regret for any property damage caused by the incident.
“We take full responsibility for the expenses related to cleaning and repairing the damage and have deployed teams to address the issue immediately,” expressed the distillery in a statement on Facebook. “We are dedicated to swiftly resolving this situation.”
Local firefighters diligently collected a significant amount of the spilled liquid and transported it to a wastewater treatment facility for proper handling.
Pedro Carvalho, the CEO of the distillery, revealed that approximately 600,000 gallons of wine gushed out of the facility in just under an hour. The incident occurred when the first vat experienced a structural failure, exerting enough pressure to knock over the adjacent vat.
In an interview with The New York Times, Carvalho assured that the town’s streets are unlikely to retain any lingering scent of the incident, considering the “fine quality” of the wine.
