K9 Hero Yoda Foils Criminal Danelo Cavalcante

  • A law enforcement dog named Yoda apprehended escaped Pennsylvania prisoner Danelo Cavalcante.
  • Cavalcante was finally apprehended after two weeks on the run.
  • Yoda left Cavalcante with a “minor” scalp injury, according to authorities.

Escaped convict Danelo Cavalcante was apprehended by a law enforcement dog named Yoda after a two-week-long manhunt, according to authorities.

Cavalcante, a convicted killer, was taken into custody by police in northern Chester County, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday.

He had escaped from the Chester County Prison by climbing over razor wire after crab-walking up a wall. Cavalcante is also wanted for a homicide in Brazil.

When Yoda was released by US Customs and Border Protection, Cavalcante was armed with a stolen rifle and attempting to hide from tactical teams in thick underbrush. Yoda “subdued” him, causing a minor scalp wound.

Law enforcement quickly closed in on Cavalcante and he surrendered without firing his weapon.

“He continued to resist, but was forcibly taken into custody,” said Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens, emphasizing that no one was injured during the arrest.

Bivens highlighted the important role K9s like Yoda play in capturing individuals.

Police dogs have faced growing controversy in recent years due to the injuries they can cause. Although rarely fatal, police dog bites inflict significant harm on thousands of Americans annually, including innocent bystanders and even their own handlers.

Insider’s Hannah Beckler reported on the use of patrol dogs in US prisons, where they often attack prisoners who are shackled or prone, leading to lasting trauma for victims and witnesses.

The video of Cavalcante’s daring escape from prison garnered attention, and for nearly two weeks, he managed to elude hundreds of police officers conducting an extensive search in northern Chester County.

Residents in the area lived in fear as there were numerous sightings of Cavalcante.

Thermal heat technology was utilized by the police to track Cavalcante before surrounding him early Wednesday morning.

“Cavalcante did not realize he was surrounded until that had occurred,” said Lt. Col. Bivens at a press conference.

US Customs and Border Protection worked together with Pennsylvania State Police and other law enforcement agencies to capture Cavalcante.

“Most importantly, all those involved in the search were able to return home safely after the conclusion of this manhunt,” said a spokesperson for US Customs and Border Protection.
