The wife of Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán was released from prison on Wednesday after serving less than two years of her three-year sentence. She had pleaded guilty to aiding her husband in his multibillion-dollar criminal scheme.
Emma Coronel Aispuro, 34, was reportedly released from a residential re-entry facility in Long Beach, California, according to an article from The New York Times. She had previously been held at a federal prison in Texas before being transferred to the halfway house earlier this year, as reported by The Los Angeles Times.
Coronel Aispuro, a dual citizen of the US and Mexico, was sentenced to three years in prison in November 2021 after pleading guilty to multiple federal crimes, including aiding Guzmán in smuggling drugs across the US border and helping him escape custody in 2015. Prosecutors alleged that she was involved in planning another prison escape before her husband was extradited to the US in 2017.
The federal trial against the notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán concluded in 2019, resulting in a life sentence plus 30 years. Throughout the trial, his former beauty queen wife stood by his side.
Guzmán pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking charges related to allegations of smuggling cocaine and other drugs across the Mexico-US border, amassing a multi-billion-dollar fortune in the process.
