Ex-Sheriff Villanueva Takes on Janice Hahn: A Noteworthy Political Challenge Revealed

Former Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva announced Tuesday evening that he will be running against Supervisor Janice Hahn in the upcoming March primary.

“County government is responsible for the health, safety, and welfare of all county residents. In that regard, the board has failed miserably,” expressed Villanueva in an interview with Fox11. “Just take a look at the news every day. We are bombarded with images of violent crime, smash-and-grab robberies, and senseless acts of violence.”

When asked about his strategy to defeat Hahn, Villanueva pointed out, “One thing is for sure, she is no Kenneth Hahn. During his tenure as a supervisor, there was a period of civility and balance in county government.”

“Today, they have strayed so far to the left of center that they are unrecognizable. They no longer represent the will of the people, especially the residents of the Fourth District. Our goal is to bring back a sense of moderation and unity.”

Janice Hahn, who was elected in 2016 and re-elected in 2020, currently represents the Fourth District, which encompasses areas from the Palos Verdes Peninsula to Long Beach, and north to the southeastern part of Los Angeles County and the eastern San Gabriel Valley, including Huntington Park, Bell, Commerce, Pico Rivera, Whittier, and La Habra Heights.

As of now, there has been no response to an email sent late Tuesday night to Hahn’s campaign consultant, Dave Jacobson, seeking comment.

Villanueva, who was elected as sheriff in 2018, causing an upset defeat to then-Sheriff Jim McDonnell, recently lost his re-election bid in November to former Long Beach Police Department Chief Robert Luna.

Both Hahn and Villanueva belong to the Democratic party. However, the Board of Supervisors, like all local government positions in California, is nonpartisan.
