Coast Guard Halts Suspected Illegal Charter Boat Activity in Marina del Rey

The U.S. Coast Guard and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department intercepted a 37-foot pleasure craft carrying 20 passengers in Marina del Rey. It was discovered that the vessel was operating illegally as a charter, officials announced on Saturday.

During the inspection conducted last Saturday, several violations were found on the SAIL LA VIE. These included the absence of a valid Certificate of Inspection, unauthorized operation in coastwise trade without the appropriate Certificate of Documentation endorsement, and failure to implement a random drug program.

As a result of these violations, the Coast Guard issued a Captain of the Port Order, ordering the immediate cessation of operations as a small passenger vessel for SAIL LA VIE. The order will only be lifted once all violations have been rectified, the Coast Guard stated.

The agency emphasized that illegal charters pose significant safety risks to the public. Captains who operate vessels with paying passengers are required to hold a Coast Guard license and comply with safety regulations.

“Passengers are strongly advised by the Coast Guard to request their Captain’s Merchant Mariner Credential for verification,” the agency added.

Owners and operators of illegal charter boats may face substantial civil penalties, amounting to tens of thousands of dollars. Additionally, violating a Captain of the Port Order is a felony offense punishable by up to six years in prison. Organizations found guilty of this offense could also face a fine of up to $500,000.
