Los Angeles City Councilwoman Traci Park is set to introduce a motion on Friday to save Marilyn Monroe’s Brentwood home from demolition. The goal is to have the home declared a historic-cultural monument.
The owners of the 1920-era home, which Monroe purchased in the early 1960s and where she tragically passed away in 1962, are planning to demolish it.
Recent reports state that the property was bought in 2017 for $7.25 million by Glory of the Snow LLC, managed by hedge fund manager Dan Lukas. It was later sold to Glory of the Snow Trust for $8.35 million this year. The reasons behind the owner’s decision to demolish the home remain unclear.
The news of the home’s impending demolition has created a stir among local history enthusiasts and Marilyn Monroe fans.
Councilwoman Park has stepped in to advocate for saving the structure from destruction.
“This critical step highlights the city of Los Angeles’ commitment to preserving its rich history, ensuring that iconic landmarks and significant moments continue to inspire future generations,” stated Park’s office.
Park revealed that a demolition permit was granted before her team had a chance to address the issue. According to her, the permit was issued on Thursday for the demolition of the single-family dwelling, along with an attached garage, pool house, and storage. The timeline for the actual demolition remains unclear.
The councilwoman’s office received numerous calls this week from people urging her to intervene and prevent the planned demolition.
“Marilyn Monroe was more than just a movie icon to people all over the world,” said Park. “Her story, from a challenging childhood spent in orphanages and foster homes to becoming a global sensation, is a shining example of triumphing over adversity.”
If approved, Park’s motion would initiate the process of designating the property as a historic-cultural monument, thereby preserving the home.
