Breaking news: Sony’s racing movie “Gran Turismo” emerged victorious at the box office, surpassing “Barbie” in ticket sales for the weekend.
On Sunday, it appeared that “Gran Turismo” and “Barbie” were in a close competition, both earning just over $17 million. However, Monday’s official numbers revealed that “Gran Turismo” secured $17.4 million, while “Barbie” lagged behind with $15.1 million in North American theaters.
Unconventionally, “Gran Turismo” included earnings from pre-shows and preview screenings in its total revenue. Sony also strategically adjusted its release strategy, opting for limited previews and fan events for two weeks before a nationwide rollout, due to the ongoing actors’ strike.
The competition between the two movies was affected by National Cinema Day, which offered discounted tickets to all films on Sunday. Despite technically selling more tickets overall, “Barbie” did not perform as well in individual showings compared to “Gran Turismo.”
