Harry Kane couldn’t have asked for a better debut in the Bundesliga. The 30-year-old England captain found the net for Bayern Munich in their 4-0 win against Werder Bremen on Friday. The other goal-scorers were Leroy Sané (4′ & 90′) and Mathys Tel (94′). This victory came just a week after Bayern’s disappointing 3-0 loss to RB Leipzig in the DFL Supercup.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Kane expressed his delight, stating, “It was fantastic. There was a lot of talk leading up to the game, and I was eager to get out there and start playing. It began well with an early goal, but it was a challenging match. We created good chances, but we lacked the finishing touch.”
According to Opta, Kane becomes only the second English player, after former Hoffenheim forward Reiss Nelson, to score on his Bundesliga debut. Not only did Kane find the back of the net for Bayern’s second goal, but he also assisted Sané for the opening goal.
While Bayern’s four goals and clean sheet are positives for the team and their fans, there are still some concerns. The flaws that were evident in their loss to RB Leipzig persist. Bayern struggled to convert their chances, and it seems that a fast-paced team could expose their defense, as the Red Bulls did in the previous game.
Kane’s second goal seemed to seal the victory for Bayern. The play was set up by a brilliant run from Alphonso Davies, who found Kane in a perfect position to score. Sané and Tel added two more goals to complete the scoreline.
Despite the flaws, there are positives to take from the game. Bayern kept a clean sheet, and their star signing, Harry Kane, had a stellar start. The chemistry between Kane and his teammates will improve over time, and the defense needs to address their lapses in concentration. Bremen failed to capitalize on Friday, but against stronger opponents, Bayern could be punished.
Kane spoke highly of the Bundesliga atmosphere, saying, “The fans from both sides were incredible throughout the game, much different from some of the Premier League atmospheres I’ve experienced.” It’s clear that Kane enjoyed his first-ever Bundesliga match.
