RAC Reminds British Drivers to Display French Clean Air Stickers in Cities | Drive Safely

British drivers planning to take their cars to France this summer are being reminded of the requirement to display a clean air sticker if they intend to enter certain cities. Failure to do so could result in a fine of up to €180 (£154). France has implemented over 12 clean air zones, including popular tourist destinations like Paris, where drivers must display a Crit’Air vignette to indicate their vehicle’s emissions. The RAC has advised drivers to apply for the sticker through the official French government website before their departure, as they are not available locally. Additionally, drivers should be aware of potential driving restrictions based on their vehicle’s emissions. The Crit’Air system consists of six categories, ranging from green for the cleanest vehicles to dark grey for the most polluting. Even fully electric vehicles need to display the sticker. Travelers heading to cities such as Paris, Rouen, and Toulouse risk fines if they fail to display the sticker, while those avoiding these cities are exempt. Ultimately, low emission zones are expected to be implemented in all urban areas with a population of over 150,000. The stickers cost €4.61 each, including postage, but drivers should allow enough time for delivery. Violators can currently be fined €68 on the spot, but next year, camera-based enforcement will be implemented, leading to fines of up to €750. The RAC spokesperson, Rod Dennis, emphasized the importance of obtaining the correct sticker, as driving without one or with a non-compliant vehicle could result in penalties. Older vehicles, registered prior to January 1997 for cars and June 2000 for motorbikes and scooters, are not eligible for the sticker and are prohibited from entering restricted zones. Furthermore, drivers planning trips to other European countries such as Spain, Italy, and Switzerland are advised to check for any low emission zone restrictions in their destinations.
