UAW Leader Advocates for Union’s Ambitious Demands while Criticizing Stellantis’ Proposals

During a live broadcast on Facebook on August 8, 2023, UAW President Shawn Fain passionately defended the union’s demands for Detroit automakers while expressing his disdain for Stellantis’ contract proposals. Fain openly criticized the preliminary bargaining proposals from the parent company of Chrysler and Jeep, referring to them as “trash” before dramatically disposing of the papers in a garbage can.

Fain outlined various reported changes to the contract, including modifications to holiday and vacation days, absenteeism policies, 401(k) contributions, and profit-sharing payments. He condemned these proposals as “concessionary” and proclaimed that they disrespect the hard work of UAW members throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

Stellantis has not yet responded to Fain’s remarks.

This theatrical display marks the culmination of intense negotiations between the UAW and Stellantis, Ford Motor, and General Motors. Fain’s actions follow the UAW’s recent demand for double-digit pay increases and defined-benefit pensions for all workers, citing substantial pay raises for company CEOs in recent years.

Fain expressed support for the proposed pay raises, considering them well-deserved. The UAW’s economic demands include significant wage increases, increased paid time off, the reinstatement of retiree medical benefits, and cost-of-living adjustments.

The current contracts between the UAW and Detroit automakers are set to expire on September 14. Typically, contract talks commence in July ahead of the mid-September expiration date. Usually, one automaker is selected as the lead company for negotiations, with the others extending their deadlines. However, Fain hinted that this year’s negotiations may deviate from the norm without providing further details.

Fain emphasized that September 14 is a firm deadline and not merely a reference point, urging the “Big Three” automakers to swiftly engage in meaningful negotiations.

Fain also criticized Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares for his absence in the negotiations, noting that he had chosen not to participate directly and would rely on his regional leaders instead.
