- Her next show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe sold out.
An actor who gained viral attention for her emotional social media post about only one person attending her play later sold out her next show, according to a report.
Georgie Grier shared a photo of herself in tears on Twitter, expressing her disappointment with the small audience at her one-woman show during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
“There was only one person in my audience today when I performed my one-woman play, ‘Sunsets’ at #edfringe. It’s fine, isn’t it? It’s fine …?” she wrote.
The tweet quickly went viral, accumulating over 11 million views so far and receiving thousands of supportive comments. Many other performers and public figures also shared their own similar experiences.
The venue where Grier is performing in Edinburgh stated that her Friday afternoon show sold out, as reported by The Guardian.
Grier, who wrote and stars in the play titled “Sunsets,” portrays the theme of “happily ever after” in her one-woman show.
Reflecting on the situation, Grier described the past 24 hours as a whirlwind and expressed gratitude for the uplifting response to her tweet.
“When I posted, I was hoping for a few messages of support or advice from fellow Fringe acts, however, I had no idea it would resonate with so many people,” she stated, as per The Guardian.
“There are ups and downs every day (every hour) at the Fringe, but ultimately I know I’m fortunate to be performing here,” Grier added.
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is renowned for featuring over 3,000 shows in a span of three weeks. Many shows are presented by amateur and lesser-known artists, making it a fiercely competitive environment to attract an audience. It’s likely that other shows may also experience small attendance on certain nights.
The sole person in the audience for “Sunsets” during Thursday’s show was fellow actor Sophie Craig. They had connected on Instagram and reached an agreement to attend each other’s shows. Without this arrangement, Grier would have performed to an empty room.
Craig praised Grier’s effort, stating that she gave her all and her performance remained unaffected by the lack of audience. “It’s incredibly brave to bring a show to the Fringe on your own, especially as a female and a new writer, and she absolutely nailed it,” Craig expressed.
