LA City Council Overhauls Committees Following Price Scandal

The City Council has approved President Paul Krekorian’s recommendations to restructure committees, change jurisdictions and meeting times, and dissolve one committee in response to Councilman Curren Price surrendering his committee assignments in June due to criminal charges.

Krekorian’s office stated that this restructuring aims to simplify the committee structure, fill the vacancies left by Price, and add Councilmember Imelda Padilla to multiple committees.

In a letter dated June 20, Krekorian informed Mayor Karen Bass, the City Clerk, council members, and city departments of these proposed changes, which were approved at the council meeting:

  • The Economic and Community Development Committee will be dissolved, and its responsibilities will be redistributed.
  • The Trade, Travel and Tourism Committee will assume oversight of the Economic and Workforce Development Department and other economic, workforce, and business matters.
  • The Civil Rights, Equity, Immigration, Aging and Disability Committee will now be responsible for oversight of the Community Investment and Families Department, Consolidated Plan, FamilySources Centers, and policies related to poverty reduction.
  • The Rules, Election and Intergovernmental Relations Committee will now meet on the third Friday of each month at 1 p.m.
  • The Transportation Committee will now meet on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 3:30 p.m.
  • The Budget, Finance and Innovation Committee will now meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at 2 p.m.

In addition to these changes, Krekorian assigned Council President Pro Tem Marqueece Harris-Dawson to the budget committee and the Rules, Elections and Intergovernmental Relations Committee. Councilman Bob Blumenfield will join Harris-Dawson in the rules committee.

Councilwoman Padilla, the newest member of the council, has been assigned to the Personnel, Audits and Hiring Committee; the Civil Rights, Equity, Aging & Disability Committee; and the Planning & Land Use Management Committee. She will also serve as the chair of the Government Operations Committee.

Councilman John Lee will serve as the vice chair of the Planning & Land Use Management Committee, while Councilwoman Traci Park will serve as the chair of the Ad Hoc Committee on the 2028 Olympics, with Harris-Dawson and Padilla joining her on the panel.

Meanwhile, Councilman Price, who is facing criminal charges, including theft by embezzlement and perjury, for voting on projects involving developers tied to his wife’s consulting firm without reporting the connections, is set to be arraigned on August 28.

The criminal complaint alleges that Price embezzled money between 2013 and 2017 by having the city cover medical premiums for someone who he claimed to be married to, despite still being married to someone else at the time.

Despite the charges, Price has expressed his desire to remain on the council and has not attended a council meeting since being charged.
