By October, the Philippines to receive 2 million doses of swine fever vaccine from Vietnam’s exports

Vietnam announced on Wednesday that it will export two million doses of the African swine fever vaccine to the Philippines by October. This comes just one week after the Vietnamese government approved the domestic use of the world’s first commercial vaccines against the disease. African swine fever has been a significant disruptor in the global pork market, causing massive losses. In 2018-19, China, the largest pork producer in the world, saw half of its domestic pig population die, resulting in estimated losses of over $100 billion.

The vaccine being shipped to the Philippines is produced by AVAC Vietnam JSC for commercial use. The company has already sent 300,000 doses to the Philippines since receiving approval. This move by Vietnam signifies the country’s vast export potential in the field.

In late August, Vietnam approved the domestic commercial use of two African swine fever vaccines, NAVET-ASFVAC and AVAC ASF LIVE, which were co-developed by Vietnamese companies and U.S. researchers. The government reported that over 650,000 doses of these vaccines were recently tested on hog herds in 40 provinces across Vietnam, achieving an impressive efficacy rate of 95%.

Overall, Vietnam’s contribution to the global fight against African swine fever through vaccine development and export demonstrates the country’s commitment to addressing this significant agricultural challenge.
