Meg Mathews handed driving ban following drink-driving incident after book launch

The 57-year-old individual appeared in Cornwall Magistrates’ Court in Bodmin on Friday following an incident that took place in Newquay earlier this month. This former music PR executive had a few drinks at a book launch on the evening of July 7 and had planned to stay at a friend’s house nearby. However, the friend expressed an interest in seeing Mathews’s new Jeep Wrangler car. Mathews agreed and went for a drive but unfortunately collided with a parked car in Stret Ewyn, Nansledan, resulting in minor damage. The owner of the vehicle promptly contacted the police at around 9.15pm. Mathews failed a breath test conducted at the scene and was subsequently arrested. The court heard that her reading was 77mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, exceeding the legal limit of 35mg. Mathews appeared in court via videolink and pleaded guilty to the charge of driving a motor vehicle with an alcohol level above the limit. During the brief hearing, Mathews only confirmed her name, date of birth, and address. Steven Cox, her defense attorney, informed the court that Mathews had a clean record and had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity. Cox explained that Mathews had been at a book signing event where she hadn’t spoken publicly in years, causing her to feel nervous. She was offered a couple of drinks, but unfortunately, those drinks were much stronger than originally thought. After the event, Mathews attempted to stay at her friend’s house, which was located nearby. However, before doing so, her friend wanted to inspect her new car. Mathews made the poor decision to drive and ended up colliding with a parked car. Cox emphasized that Mathews immediately stopped and the owner of the vehicle came out, having already called the police. Mathews was exchanging details with the owner when the police arrived and administered the breath test that led to her arrest. Cox stated that some of the allegations surrounding the incident, such as Mathews rolling on the ground and shouting, were false. He described it as a simple drink-driving matter. Mathews expressed her remorse and gratitude toward the police officers who helped her during the ordeal. Despite having no fixed salary, Mathews assured the court that she could pay any fines and costs within 14 days. She also expressed her desire to complete a drink-driving rehabilitation course. The magistrates banned Mathews from driving for 20 months, fined her £440, and ordered her to pay a £176 surcharge along with £85 in prosecution costs. Presiding justice Paul Shenton explained that Mathews received full credit for her early guilty plea, which reduced her fine to £660. He justified the 20-month driving ban by considering the aggravating factors of carrying a passenger and colliding with another vehicle, while taking into account Mathews’s previous good character. If Mathews successfully completes the drink-driving rehabilitation course, her driving ban will be reduced by 20 weeks. It is worth mentioning that during the 1990s, Mathews was a prominent figure in the Britpop era and was briefly married to former Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher.
