Monterey Park Mass Shooting Commemorated by Local Officials After 6 Months

On the six-month anniversary of a tragic shooting that resulted in the loss of 11 lives and left nine others injured at a dance studio in Monterey Park, local elected officials convened to highlight two proposed federal bills aimed at reducing gun violence.

Representative Judy Chu, who represents Pasadena, emphasized the importance of equal access to gun safety and prevention strategies for all Americans, regardless of language barriers. She expressed gratitude for partnering with Senator Kirsten Gillibrand to enhance and expand the effectiveness of “red flag” laws, which have proven to reduce gun-related deaths.

Chu, along with local residents and fellow elected officials, came together outside the Star Ballroom Dance Studio to commemorate the shooting that occurred on January 21. The gunman later proceeded to the Lai Laid Studio and Ballroom in Alhambra. However, an employee managed to disarm him before he could cause harm on the dance floor.

The gunman, identified as 72-year-old Huu Can Tran, tragically took his own life the following day after being pulled over by police near a strip mall in Torrance.

During the news conference, Sheriff Robert Luna revealed that the gunman had sent a “manifesto” to law enforcement prior to the shooting. However, he declined to disclose its contents. The manifesto is currently being reviewed by federal investigators, and the motive behind the attack remains unknown.

Meanwhile, Chu highlighted two proposed pieces of legislation—the Language Access to Gun Violence Prevention Strategies Act and the FLAG (Fair Legal Access Grants) Act. The former aims to facilitate multilingual outreach efforts on red flag laws and gun violence prevention, while the latter seeks to provide funding for proper legal representation to individuals seeking to file red flag petitions that prevent individuals with mental health or other issues from owning firearms.

“The Language Access to Gun Violence Prevention Strategies Act and the FLAG Act will support family members and community members in navigating the complex legal system when seeking to temporarily disarm someone showing signs of violence,” explained Chu. “By equipping more communities with the necessary tools to prevent gun violence, we can pay tribute to the lives lost in towns and cities across the country, including my own hometown of Monterey Park.”

Chu introduced the Language Access to Gun Violence Prevention Strategies Act, and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand from New York presented the FLAG Act.

Gillibrand stated, “Strengthening red flag laws nationwide is crucial for creating safer communities. Too often, educators, law enforcement officials, and ordinary citizens lack the time and support they need to navigate the court system effectively and file a red flag claim when they observe troubling or potentially dangerous behavior by individuals with access to firearms.”
