Cork Airport Authorities Engage in Discussions Regarding Non-stop Flights to New York

DAA, the state body responsible for Cork and Dublin airports, has announced plans to potentially open a direct route from Cork to the United States in the next three years. Cork Airport has submitted a proposal to the government’s review of regional airports, highlighting the demand for transatlantic services, particularly between Cork and New York. Discussions with several potential partners are ongoing, although the DAA believes this project will likely be realized in the medium term. A survey conducted by Cork Chamber revealed that New York was the most desired new direct destination from Cork Airport among businesses. Conor Healy, CEO of Cork Chamber, emphasized the need for new routes to key business locations to support the continued economic growth in the region. Irish airports are actively seeking increased direct links to the Americas to attract more passengers. DAA’s CEO, Kenny Jacobs, confirmed discussions with LATAM, one of Latin America’s largest airlines, about a potential route from Dublin to Brazil. Furthermore, Cork Airport’s submission to the regional review called for state subsidies on airport charges, aiming to reduce emissions. The DAA fully supports the government’s goal to reduce Ireland’s emissions by 51% by 2030 but believes increased state support is necessary to achieve this, including targeted reductions in aircraft emissions. The organization suggests subsidizing airport charges based on the use of more sustainable aircraft at Cork Airport. Additionally, they propose providing operating aid for airports that offer discounts on airport charges for the deployment of low-carbon aircraft.
