Upstate Art Weekend Experiences Unprecedented Growth

In just three years, Upstate Art Weekend has transformed from a simple guide for city dwellers to a large-scale festival involving over 100 participants across 10 counties in New York. This year’s fourth edition boasts a variety of exciting experiences and events. Attendees can explore private artists’ studios at locations like the Poughkeepsie Underwear Factory, Beacon Open Studios, and Atlas Studios in Newburgh. Additionally, there will be an auction supporting the New York Abortion Access Fund at Noise for Now in Kingston, as well as a preview of the upcoming Borscht Belt Museum in Ellenville.

The festival also features captivating performances. The Hudson Valley Intertribal Noise Symposium on Friday will bring Indigenous sound artists to the picturesque sculpture park at Art Omi. On Saturday, the CCS Bard Hessel Museum of Art will host an outdoor performance by Emily Johnson in conjunction with its exhibition “Indian Theater: Native Performance, Art and Self-Determination Since 1969.”

Meanwhile, the New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) will once again take over industrial buildings on the Catskill Creek in Catskill, NY. The recently rebranded NADA Foreland art fair offers a vibrant selection of galleries and exhibitors, including Deanna Evans Projects showcasing the exuberant embroidered works of Padma Rajendran, Margot Samel presenting Olivia Jia’s thought-provoking trompe l’oeil paintings, Halsey McKay featuring Ryan Steadman’s colorful oil silhouettes, and Dimin showcasing Whit Harris’ lush ceramics.

One standout artist opening her studio to visitors this weekend is Kathy Ruttenberg. Her near life-size ceramic figures of animals, sprites, and fairy-tale heroines evoke complex emotions and narratives. Visitors to her former church turned showroom in Bearsville, NY, can ponder the symbolism and meaning behind her captivating sculptures. Alternatively, Lyles & King in Chinatown is currently hosting “Twilight in the Garden of Hope,” an elaborate fountain installation that delves into primal themes.

While exploring the Hudson Valley, art enthusiasts can also visit other notable galleries like Geary, Mother, Analog Diary, and Elijah Wheat Showroom. Additionally, destinations like Dia Beacon and Storm King Art Center offer hours of awe-inspiring art experiences.
