This legislation repeals a 1931 law that had imposed penalties of up to a year in prison and a $1,000 fine for unmarried couples cohabitating, according to the Michigan Advance. The law had not been enforced for many years, but some Republican lawmakers wanted to keep it in effect due to concerns about the impact of declining marriage rates on society. However, the bill easily passed the state House and Senate.
