Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed a legislation that allows unmarried couples to live together. This legislation repeals a 1931 law that had imposed penalties of up to a year in prison and a $1,000 fine for unmarried couples cohabitating, according to the Michigan Advance. The law had not been enforced for many years, but some Republican lawmakers wanted to keep it in effect due to concerns about the impact of declining marriage rates on society. However, the bill easily passed the state House and Senate. Democratic Senator Stephanie Chang, the sponsor of the bill, said that this move brings Michigan “into the current century”, especially considering the record-low US marriage rate, as stated in a report by Bowling Green State University.

The Michigan state Senate has voted 29-9 in favor of repealing a law that criminalized unmarried couples living together in a lewd and lascivious manner, as reported by the Detroit News. The bill would remove the provision against “lewdly and lasciviously associating and cohabitating together,” while retaining the provision against engaging in open and gross lewdness and lascivious behavior. Although the law had not been enforced for a long time, individuals could not claim someone as a dependent on their taxes if their relationship violated state law.
