California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) has revealed that he watches Fox News every night to gain a deeper understanding of it and to observe patterns in conservative media. Despite concerns from his staff about the potential negative effects, Newsom believes it is necessary to stay informed.
During an interview with MSNBC’s Jen Psaki, Newsom criticized Fox News, NewsMax, and One America News Network, accusing them of promoting an environment where illusion triumphs over facts and contributing to the division in the country.
Psaki asked Newsom if he occasionally tunes into Fox prime time to see what’s happening. Newsom replied, “Not occasionally. Every night.” He explained that his staff has tried to intervene, concerned about his obsession with Fox News, but he sees it as a way to identify patterns that emerge.
Psaki also asked Newsom whether Democrats should still make appearances on Fox News. Newsom responded by saying, “It contributes to the mental health crisis in the state. So, on the basis of one’s own personal conditions, I would not recommend it,” accompanied by laughter.
Last month, Newsom did appear on Fox News, using the opportunity to combat misinformation. He addressed Sean Hannity’s talking points about California’s economy, President Joe Biden’s competence, and other topics.
In January, following a mass shooting in Monterey Park, Newsom criticized the Fox News prime-time lineup, calling it a “disgrace.” He accused the network of perpetuating crime and violence through xenophobia, racial priming, and inaction on gun safety.
