Faye Rochford’s journey in fashion began at a young age. She recalls fondly, “As children, my siblings and I would sit down in front of the Rose of Tralee and sketch dresses. We were always immersed in creativity.” This passion for arts and crafts led them to set up a craft shop in their parents’ shed, where they sold handcrafted clay pots made with clay from the fields. Rochford’s parents nurtured their resourcefulness and even embarked on treasure hunts to find small, tiled mirrors to frame and sell. (Photo: Claire Jeanne Nash)
This love for reinvention stayed with Rochford. “I have a deep love for vintage and transforming clothing. It’s incredibly thrilling to completely revamp something.” Although she no longer has time to upcycle clothing due to the demands of her growing business, she remains committed to educating herself on sustainable practices. She opts for natural certified organic fabrics, deadstock, and repurposed textiles. Rochford’s passion for print and color led her to study fashion design at NCAD.
During her internships with designers like Philip Treacy and Diane von Furstenberg, Rochford drew inspiration from their distinct styles. She describes her time at Philip Treacy as a hands-on experience with a focus on textiles. Working with Diane von Furstenberg exposed her to the world of vibrant prints. Her later role at Free People in Philadelphia further honed her design skills, and she sought to incorporate their process into her own work. (Photo: Mark Hill)
In 2018, while pregnant with her first child, Rochford embraced the challenges of balancing motherhood and her career. She quickly realized the importance of prioritizing and taking action. “Becoming a mother pushes you to get things done. There’s no time to waste,” she explains. Despite the self-imposed pressures, Rochford welcomed her first child five years ago and launched FéRí in 2020. Her exquisite prints can now be found at Brown Thomas Create until August 20.
Rochford’s latest collection draws inspiration from 1970s interiors, particularly kitschy and coordinated wallpaper and carpet prints. She explains, “It’s making a comeback in a more subtle way. My designs are always driven by the whimsy of fantasy floral prints and the nostalgia of dressing-up boxes from childhood. It’s an eclectic and slightly bohemian mix.” Visit feri.ie and brownthomas.com to explore more of Rochford’s unique creations.
