Megan Rapinoe Declares Her Retirement After 2023 Season

  • Megan Rapinoe, a renowned athlete, has officially announced her retirement from the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) after the 2023 season concludes.
  • This declaration comes just days before her team departs for New Zealand to compete for another World Cup championship.
  • Interestingly, Rapinoe’s decision to retire was partially influenced by her wife, Sue Bird, who retired from the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) last year—a circumstance that aroused envy within the soccer icon.

Megan Rapinoe, an exceptional athlete celebrated for her triumphs in two World Cups and an Olympic Games, shared her retirement plans during a press conference on Saturday.

Anticipating her team’s upcoming journey to New Zealand, where they aim to capture their third consecutive World Cup victory, Rapinoe disclosed her decision to the media.

“It is with a deep sense of peace & gratitude that I have decided this will be my final season playing this beautiful game,” Rapinoe expressed on Twitter.

Rapinoe’s retirement announcement follows closely behind the retirement of her wife, Sue Bird, from the WNBA. In a February interview with Insider, Rapinoe revealed feeling envious of her wife’s more relaxed lifestyle.

In addition to her athletic achievements, Rapinoe has emerged as a passionate advocate for gender equity in the United States. In 2021, she met with President Joe Biden to discuss equal pay for the US Women’s National Team, filing a lawsuit against the US Soccer Federation in 2019 alongside 28 other players. Furthermore, Rapinoe has been vocal about her opposition to anti-trans laws that restrict transgender athletes from participating in sports that align with their gender identity:

“Show me the evidence that trans women are taking everyone’s scholarships, are dominating in every sport, are winning every title,” Rapinoe stated emphatically during an interview with Time Magazine. “I’m sorry, it’s just not happening. So we need to start from inclusion, period.”
