Greta Thunberg Accused of Refusing to Comply with Police Instructions During Protest

Famed climate activist Greta Thunberg has been charged by Swedish police for allegedly disobeying their orders during a protest that aimed to block fuel transports. According to local media, the 20-year-old Swedish native and another climate activist are facing prosecution for refusing to halt their blockade of oil tankers in Malmö on June 19. The indictment, obtained by Sydsvenskan, states that Thunberg and her fellow demonstrators were ordered to move from the road to a lawn so that the trucks could pass, but they did not comply. Eventually, they were forcibly removed from the scene.

Thunberg joined around 20 teenagers and young adults associated with Take Back the Future, a youth-led climate justice group that organized the protest. The organization referred to the blockade as a “peaceful resistance” against the fossil fuel industry. During the protest, approximately 30 trucks were prevented from driving through the port, as Thunberg and other activists were sitting on the road. At least one activist reportedly climbed on top of a truck to stop it from moving forward.

A hearing for Thunberg’s charges is tentatively scheduled for the end of the month, and disobedience of police orders carries a maximum sentence of six months in prison under Swedish law. However, the prosecutor in the case stated that fines are typically imposed on those convicted. Thunberg has not yet commented on the charges.

This is not the first time Thunberg has clashed with law enforcement during climate protests. In January, she was detained twice in three days for participating in an anti-coal demonstration in the abandoned village of Lützerath in Germany.

Despite the legal proceedings, Thunberg remains active in advocating for climate justice. She recently participated in a march in Switzerland with other activists, demanding that regulators and central bankers stop financing the fossil fuel industry. Thunberg continues to use social media to promote climate initiatives and raise awareness of the urgent need for action.
