End-of-2022 CDC Estimates Unveil Number of Uninfected Americans from COVID

According to recent data published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it has been found that approximately 25% of Americans over the age of 16 have not been infected with COVID-19 as of the end of 2022. The study, which was updated last week, estimated that 77.5% of Americans have antibodies from previous COVID infections. The figures also reveal that 96.7% of Americans have COVID antibodies from previous infections, vaccinations, or both as of November 15, 2022.

Seroprevalence, which refers to the percentage of individuals with antibodies against a virus in their blood, was the focus of this survey. The study was conducted on a sample of about 143,000 blood donors to determine the number of Americans who have been infected and/or vaccinated against COVID-19 and possess antibodies. The research analyzed how these figures varied across different racial groups and geographical locations throughout 2022.

Interestingly, individuals aged 65 and over had the lowest seroprevalence resulting from COVID infections, with only 56.5% having antibodies. Conversely, 87.1% of those aged 16 to 29 had antibodies from previous infections.

Geographically, Iowa had the highest seroprevalence rate in the country, at 90.6%, while Vermont had the lowest, at 64.4%. Unfortunately, due to a small number of samples analyzed, researchers were unable to estimate the seroprevalence in Florida.

Moreover, men had a slightly higher rate of antibodies from previous infections, at 79.3%, compared to women, at 75.7%. In terms of ethnicity, Hispanics exhibited the highest overall seroprevalence rate, at 80.6%, while non-Hispanic Asians had the lowest, at 66.1%.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has concluded its nationwide seroprevalence studies.

In other news, Moderna has sought approval from the Food and Drug Administration for its updated COVID vaccine targeting sub-variant XBB.1.5, following the recommendation of an FDA subcommittee.

As of June 24, XBB.1.5 accounted for the largest proportion, 27%, of COVID cases in the United States, according to the CDC.

While Americans are gradually moving on from the COVID era, with President Joe Biden declaring an end to the national emergency in April, New York recently decided to discontinue its COVID vaccination app due to costs, according to WABC. The app allowed citizens to display their vaccination status and COVID test results.
